GJB Paintings and Sculptures

Welcome to the homepage of United States artist G. Jon Barnes, a native San Diego sculptor and painter, who was born Feb. 19, 1946, and who passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in San Diego, California, on Aug. 31, 1998. He was 52 years old. Jon attended the University of California San Diego, (UCSD), from 1964 - 1967, as one of the 181 pioneering freshmen in the first undergraduate class enrolled at the university. Jon had sculpted since the mid 1970's and exhibited in Los Angeles, San Diego and Tijuana. His San Diego venues included the San Diego Art Institute, COVA, Courtyard, Sho-En, Artwalk, North County Artists Co-op, as well as numerous local galleries, including Bravo, Arthur Danner, Signature, Gargoyle Galleries. Jon exhibited in juried shows and exhibits held by the San Diego Art Institute, the Southern California Art Glass Association, COVA and many others. Jon was guest artist at the Ilan Lael Foundation, and won numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the Art in California Discovery Award. He was a member of a number of local art organizations. Jon's background designing and fabricating race cars, provided him with the skills to create complex abstract and representational work with impeccable skill. He incorporated a variety of unusual mediums to his stainless steel, brass, raw steel, surgical steel, chrome, and bronze sculptures, consisting in part, of glass, exotic woods, gears, scientific instruments, machinery, surgical instruments, as well as a host of many ohers.
